(E) As a truly multicultural metropolis at the crossroads between Europe’s North and South, between East and West, between tradition and avant-garde, Vienna boasts a vibrant contemporary art scene. In addition to its world-class museums and non-profit art institutions, there are an amazing number of first-rate galleries that have established an international reputation for cutting-edge programming and are regular participants at the finest art fairs.

curated by_vienna 09 is an innovative project that brings 18 Viennese contemporary art galleries together with international curators of high distinction. It aims to explore novel ways of cooperation between curators and galleries. The participating galleries have formed four groups of 4—5 galleries each. Each group has selected a curator (or a team of two curators). The shows will take place within the exhibition spaces of the galleries constituting each group. Each group is strongly encouraged to treat the exhibition spaces of the participating galleries as a single exhibition zone. Each group decides together with its curator on further principles such as whether to organize the show thematically or to focus on artists not represented by the respective galleries.

curated by_vienna 09 encourages systematic cooperation between galleries and curators. It allows visitors to compare the artworks selected as well as the strategies adopted by the four groups of galleries and their respective curators and thereby gain valuable insight into curatorial practices

The project is coordinated and funded by departure, Vienna’s point of contact and funding organization in the field of creative industries including visual arts and the art market.

The curated by_vienna 09 exhibitions will be on view from May 6 through June 6, 2009. The official opening will take place on Friday, May 8, 2009, 6 pm—12 am (a shuttle bus service will be organized for the opening night). In addition, a gallery breakfast to highlight the curated by_vienna 09 shows will be scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2009, 11 am—1 pm.

The opening of curated by_vienna 09 coincides with the forthcoming VIENNAFAIR (May 7—10, 2009; VIENNAFAIR VIP opening on May 6, 2009), allowing visitors traveling to Vienna to view the exhibitions and VIENNAFAIR.

(D) Als multikulturelle europäische Metropole an der Schnittstelle zwischen Nord und Süd, Ost und West,Tradition und Avantgarde, kann Wien mit einer pulsierenden zeitgenössischen Kunstszene aufwarten. Neben seinen Museen und Non-Profit-Einrichtungen von Weltrang gibt es zahlreiche hervorragende Galerien, die sich mit topaktuellen Programmen einen internationalen Ruf erarbeitet haben und regelmäßig an den bedeutendsten Kunstmessen teilnehmen.

curated by_vienna 09 ist ein innovatives Projekt, das 18 angesehene Wiener Galerien zeitgenössischer Kunst mit internationalen, renommierten KuratorInnen zusammenbringt. Es zielt darauf ab, neuartige Wege der Kooperation zwischen KuratorInnen und Galerien zu beschreiten. Die teilnehmenden Galerien haben vier Gruppen zu jeweils 4-5 Galerien gebildet. Jede Gruppe hat eine/n KuratorIn (oder ein Team von zwei KuratorInnen) ausgewählt. Die Ausstellungen finden in den Räumlichkeiten der jeweiligen Galerien statt. Dabei sollten die Ausstellungsräume der teilnehmenden Galerien als einheitliche Ausstellungszone behandelt werden. Jede Gruppe entscheidet zusammen mit dem/r KuratorIn über alle weiteren Grundsätze, etwa ob die Ausstellung thematisch organisiert wird und inwiefern KünstlerInnen miteinbezogen werden, die von den betreffenden Galerien nicht vertreten sind.

curated by_vienna 09 fördert eine systematische Kooperation zwischen Galerien und KuratorInnen. Den BesucherInnen erlaubt dieses Projekt, die ausgewählten Kunstwerke, wie auch die Strategien der vier Galeriengruppen und der KuratorInnen miteinander zu vergleichen und somit wertvolle Einblicke in kuratorische Praktiken zu erhalten.

curated by_vienna 09 wird von departure, Wiens Kontaktstelle und Förderagentur für die Creative Industries, einschließlich der Bereiche bildende Kunst und Kunstmarkt, koordiniert und gefördert.

Die curated by_vienna 09-Ausstellungen sind von 6. Mai bis 6. Juni 2009 zu sehen. Die offizielle Eröffnung findet am 8. Mai 2009 von 18-24 Uhr statt (ein Shuttle-Bus-Service wird für die Eröffnungsnacht organisiert). Darüber hinaus ist am 9. Mai 2009 von 11-13 Uhr ein Galerien-Frühstück zur Besichtigung von curated by_vienna 09 geplant.

Die Eröffnung von curated by_vienna 09 findet während der VIENNAFAIR (7.–10. Mai 2009; VIENNAFAIR-VIP-Eröffnung am 6. Mai 2009) statt. Wienbesucher haben somit die Möglichkeit, sowohl curated by als auch die VIENNAFAIR zu sehen.
